Planing Your Garden, Part 3

The the third step to planning your garden is mapping out exactly where you plan on planting your plants.

This year I am planting two gardens. My daughters are in charge of their school garden and I am planting our home garden. Due to the complexities of managing two large gardens it is vitally important for us to have a visual map of where everything is being planted as well as when the plants need to be harvested.

The following is the step-by-step for how we planned out our gardens.

Step 1: We took photos of both gardens to ensure we had an accurate visual.

Step 2: We made maps of each garden with each bed numbered.

Step 3: Using the spread sheets we had made during steps One and Two (read first two blog posts) we then charted out what we would plant in each box. The key for our home garden was to be sure we were planting companion plants together and also to be sure we were not planting plants in the same place we had the year before. It is vitally important to make sure you rotate your plants every year. Never plant the same type of plant in the same place you did the year prior.

Once your planning is done it is time to move on to step 4.

Step 4: Start Planting!
